RIP Tiger Pataudi

I have dipped in to my old, school-time scrap book to pull out this extract from an old issue of Sportsworld, which in turn quotes from “Face to Face with a Tiger” from “The Illustrated Weekly of India of May 1986. This small piece beautifully captures Tiger’s stamp of style on Indian cricket. Regret I do not have the author’s name:

"If you’ve got a moment, try this experiment.  Take a ball, close one eye, toss it up and try catching it. The chances are you will miss. Because with one eye you will have what is known as a “parallax” problem.
Now imagine facing Jeff Thomson, John Snow, Fred Trueman or even Lance Gibbs with one eye. Or imagine taking a hot, low catch. And imagine doing all that with style, power and international class. Hard to imagine an ordinary human being doing that. But what about a Tiger? Or Mansur Ali Khan – the Nawab of Pataudi? Ah! Now that’s possible, isn’t it?
Within the first two minutes of meeting him, you’ll know Tiger’s no pussy cat. He stalks in to his lair - a brown, dark den loaded with books and a few photographs - and fixes you with a steady, unblinking gaze. His agile mind ripples with tough opinions and he expresses them with a tigerish conviction. Mansur Ali Khan is every inch his epithet – Tiger.

- The Alluring City of Bikaner

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara - The Film (Won't Get Life Back Again)

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, the latest offering from Zoya Akhtar, is a film which has no story. No conventional story, that is, which meanders through plots and subplots finally making you aspire for a satiating climax and delivers it in the end.
In fact, this movie is not at all about destinations and how to reach them fast. It is about the journeys instead, and how to enjoy them. This is about soaking in this moment, living it fully today rather than waiting for some inexplicably desirable whole in a distant future.
The journey in ZNMD is meant to be both literal and figurative. Three old friends Kabir (Abhay Deol), Imran (Farhan Akhtar) and Arjun (Hrithik Roshan), get together to undertake Kabir's bachelor party road trip around Spain before his marriage. It is during this trip that each one of them confronts his personal demons, fights his private fears and attempts to untangle his relationship, be it with a girlfriend or a long-lost father. Whether they are able to do it and how, remains the mainstay of the film.
ZNMD is a genuinely intelligent & lively film, deftly handled by the director.  There is some beautiful camaraderie and interaction among the actors, specially the three friends, interspersed with some really sparkling dialogue.
Farhan's character Imran has the wittiest of lines, delivered with his usual tongue-in-cheek humour made so popular with his TV shows. Abhay's understated style is again a winner, as is Kalki's slightly over-bearing one. Hrithik's restrained act in this movie is a memorable performance, specially in the scene where he gets the first taste of life in the deep waters. The happiest surprise for me is Katrina who has cast aside her bimbo act for good. Hers is a real and likeable character, played with conviction.
ZNMD is surely one of those select movies which you can gently laugh with and enjoy, as you do with close friends. Go for it.

Delhi - Those Times and Lives - 9 (Final)

(Final excerpt from The Last Mughal by William Dalrymple)

Nevertheless, in 1852, at the height of the career of Zauq and Ghalib, the biggest draw was not the courtesans but the mushairas of the poets, especially those held in the courtyard of the old Delhi College just outside Ajmeri Gate, or in the house of Mufti Sadruddin Azurda.

Farhatullah Baig's Delhi ki akhri shama (The Last Musha'irah of Delhi) is a fictionalised but well-informed account of what purports to be one of the last great mushairas held in Zafar's Delhi. Around the illuminated courtyard of the haveli of Mubarak Begum, the widowed bibi of Sir David Ochterlony, sit several poet-princes of the royal house, as well as forty other Delhi poets, including Azurda, Momin, Zauq, Azad, Dagh, Sahbi, Shefta, Mir, a celebrated wrestler named Yal and Ghalib himself. There was also a last White Mughal, Alex Heatherly, 'one of the great poets of the Urdu language,' according to one critic, who was related to the Skinners and so a cousin of Elizabeth Wagentrieber.
The courtyard has been filled so as to raise it to the level of the plinth of the house. On the wooden plans were spread cotton rugs. There was a profusion of chandeliers, candelabra, wall lamps, hanging lamps and Chinese lanterns so that house was converted into a veritable dome of light....From the centre of the roof were hung row upon row of jasmine garlands...the whole house was fragrant with musk, amber and aloes...Arranged in a row, at short intervals along the carpet, were the huqqas, burnished and brightly polished...
The seating pattern was arranged so that those assigned places on the right of the presiding poet had connections with the Lucknow court, and on the left were seated the Delhi masters and their pupils. All those who came from the fort held quails in their hand as the craze for quail and cock fighting was very strong at that time.."
The often extremely complex metre and rhyme patterns would be set well in advance; many of the participants would know each other well, and a spirit of friendly competition would be encouraged. The hookahs would be passed around, as would paan and sweets. The the president - in this case Mirza Fakhru - would say the Bismillah.
At this proclamation there would be pin-drop silence. The guests from the court put away their quails in their quail pouches and disposed of them behind the bolsters. The servants removed the water pipes and in their place put down spittoons, the khasdans with betel leaf and trays with aromatic spices in front of each guest. In the meantime the personal representative of the king arrived from the court with the king's ghazal, accompanied by several heralds...He sought permission to read the ghazal. Mirza Fakhru nodded his assent...
From this point the poets began their recitation, passing couplets backwards and forwards, half-singing, half-reciting, applauding and wah-wah-ing those they admired for their witty or subtle nuances, leaving those less accomplished to sink in leaden silence. The versifying would continue until dawn, when it would be the turn of Zauq and Ghalib to bring the night to its climax. But long before that, from the north, would come the distant sound of the morning bugle. Two miles away, in the British cantonments, a very different day was beginning.

In 1852, the British and Mughals found themselves in an uneasy equilibrium: at once opposed yet in balance, living lives in parallel...

End of the series.

Delhi - Those Times and Lives - 8

(Continued excerpts from William Dalrymple's The Last Mughal)

If Zafar wanted an early night - which meant one that ended around midnight - singers might be admitted to his bedchamber, where they would sing behind screens, while his masseuses worked on his head and feet, and the Abyssinian guards took their place at his door...Sometimes it is clear that such singers came out from behind the bedroom screens: one of Zafar's last marriages was to a singing girl named Man Bai, who became known as Akbar Mahal, following her wedding in 1847, when Zafar was seventy-two.

On such nights, when Zafar retired relatively early, many of the princes would head out in to the town as things began to wind down in the Fort. Some might have assignations in the kothis of the Chawri Bazar, where lights and the movement of dancing could be seen behind the lattices of the upper floors, and the sounds of tabla and singing could be heard as far away as Chandni Chowk. 'The women deck themselves in finery', noted one visitor, 'and position themselves at vantage points to attract the attention of men, either directly or through pimps. An atmosphere of lust and debauchery prevails here and the people gather at night and indulge themselves.'
The beauty and coquettishness of Delhi's courtesans were famous; people still talked of the celebrated courtesan Ad Begum of a century earlier, who would famously turn up stark naked at parties, but so cleverly painted that no one would notice: 'she decorates her legs with beautiful drawings in the style of pyjamas instead of actually wearing them; in place of the cuffs she draws flowers and petals in ink exactly as is found in the finest cloth of the Rum'. Her great rival, Nur Bai, was said to be so popular that every night the elephants of the great Mughal umrah completely blocked the narrow lanes outside her house, yet even the most senior nobles had 'to send a large sum of money to have her admit them...whoever gets enamoured of her gets sucked in to the whirlpool of her demands and brings ruin in on his house...but the pleasure of her company can only be had as long as one is in possession of riches to bestow on her.'

Delhi - Those Times and Lives - 7

I resume here with my serialisation of  excerpts from a great book "The Last Mughal" by William Dalrymple. These excerpts are culled from the chapter "An Uneasy Equilibrium'', which vividly describes the daily lives of Delhiwallahs during the reign of Bahadur Shah  Zafar. I insist you read right from Part-1 and be transported to the Delhi of yore.  William Dalrymple has most graciously allowed me to use these excerpts for our reading pleasure.

Delhiwallahs used to like to surprise visitors from outside by taking them to eat there without telling them of 'the pot of hot chillis" with which Jani would marinate his kebabs. Maulvi Muhammad Baqar's son, the young poet Azad, told of one stranger to Delhi who 'hadn't eaten for a whole day. He stretched his jaws wide and fell on it [the kebab]. And instantly it was as if his brains had been blown out of his mouth by gunpowder. He leapt back with a howl. [But the Delhiwallah who brought him replied:] "we live here only for this sharp taste".
Zafar was also fond of a little chilli in his dinner, which he began to eat no earlier than 10:30pm, a time when most of the Brisits were already well tucked up in their beds. Quail stew, venison, lamb kidneys on sweet nan called shir mal, yakhni, fish kebabs, and meat stewed with oranges were Zafar's favourite dishes, though on festive occassions the Red Fort kitchens were capable of producing astonishingly varied and prodigious quantities of Mughlai cuisine: the Bazm-i-Akhir describes a feast consisting of twenty-five varieties of bread, twenty-five different kinds of pilaos and biryanis, thirty-five different sorts of spiced stews and curries, and fifty different puddings, as well as remarkable varieties of relishes and pickles, all eaten to the sound of singers performing ghazals, while the fragrance of musk, saffron, sandalwood and rosewater filled the air.
Whatever the dish, Zafar was known to like his food heavily spiced - and he was most upset when his friend, prime minister and personal physician, Hakim Ahsanullah Khan, banned him from eating 'cayene pepper' in August 1852, following a series of digestive disorders. Another of Zafar's great pleasures, mango jam, was also forbidden by the hakim, who said that Zafar's excessive indulgence in it gave him diarrhoea...
Ghalib

For Ghalib, the late evening was also the time for indulging in mango-related pleasures, especially the exquisitely small, sweet chausa mango, a taste he shared with many other discerning Delhiwallahs, past and present. At one gathering, a group of Delhi intellectuals were discussing what qualities a good mango should have: 'In my view', said Ghalib, 'there are only two essential points about mangoes - they should be sweet and they should be plentiful'. In his old age he became worried about his declining appetite for his favourite fruit and wrote to a friend to express his anxieties. He never ate an evening meal, he told his correspondent; instead, on hot summer nights he would 'sit down to eat the mangoes when my food was fully digested, and I tell you bluntly, I would eat them until my belly was bloated and I could hardly breathe. Even now I eat them at the same time of day, but not more than ten or twelve, or if they are of the large kind, only six or seven'.
There was one another great pleasure that Ghalib reserved for the cover of darkness. 'There are seventeen bottles of good wine in the pantry, 'he wrote to one friend, describing his idea of perfection. 'So I read all day and drink all night'.
Himmat Khan, the famous blind sitar player
photo from The Last Mughal
As Ghalib was finishing his mangoes and looking forward to his bottle of wine, as the exhausted labourers were heading home to their villages before the muhalla gates were locked for the night, and as Saligram and the money lenders began finally shutting up their shops in Chandni Chowk, so in the Fort dinner was drawing to a close. This was the signal for Zafar's hookah to be brought and the evening's entertainment to begin. This could take a number of forms: ghazals from Tanras Khan; the instrumental playing of a group of sarangi players, or the court storytellers and troupes of the Fort's dancing girls. Most celebrated of all was Himmat Khan, Zafar's famous blind sitar player: 'Nobody came close to him in Dhrupad,' thought Sir Sayyid Ahmed Khan...
Moonlight from Red Fort
On other occassions, when Zafar felt the need for some peace, one of his greatest pleasures was to play chess while waiting for the new moon to come up. At other times, he is described as simply sitting after dinner and 'enjoying the moonlight'.

A Lesson In Hope

Today's Indian Express has the following article about sentencing of a rapist in the USA.
What has caught my attention and brightened up my day is the rare hope and positive outlook the rape victim Elizabeth Smart exhibits when she confronts the rapist with "I have a wonderful life now and no matter what you do, you will never affect me again...."

(click on the picture to expand)

Rape is a heinous crime which crushes the soul and the mind, much more than the body. And it assumes such sinister proportions when it is inflicted not once, not twice but "near-daily" for almost an year in sub-human conditions.
If a girl can stare the rapist in the eye and proudly declare that she can not let her whole life be affected by what some pervert did to her once, it is a lesson in near-spiritual bravery, which needs to be applauded.

Kitne Pakistan

Pakistan & America - A Case of Exploding Mangoes?

Conspiracy theorists can be assured of never being out of work if they stick to Pakistan as their subject.
Osama Bin Laden, arguably the world's most potent symbol of organized terror, has been finally taken out  by America in a covert operation deep inside Pakistan's army cantonment area of Abbotabad.
That America did not find Pakistan trustworthy enough to share with them the details of this mother-of-all-operations is a humiliation Pakistani establishment is finding hard to shrug off.
Did Pak Army know about Osama holed up in such a close proximity? Did they simply ignore it? Or did they actively abet his hiding? Is it a double-game Pakistan is playing, keeping both the fundamentalists and the Americans happy? Or is the Pak civilian establishment unaware of the agenda their Army is pursuing, which means that after all, it is again the forces (now in cahoots with the mullahs) who are running Pakistan? Does that mean America should not take Pakistan's servility for granted now?
While theories and their rebuttals keep surfacing and this curious master-protege relationship which America and Pakistan share touches another low, I am suddenly reminded of a very brilliant book - A Case of Exploding Mangoes, which is an incisive satire on the Pakistan establishment (read Army), set in the time when General Zia-ul-Haq was the President of Pakistan. General Zia was only the third  Pakistani army chief who had overthrown a democratic government via a coup but he went a step ahead and appointed himself the President. It was in his regime that an enforced Islamization of Pakistani society started and the Army gained in their nuisance value like never before.
"A Case..." is the debut novel by Mohammed Hanif, a one-time Pak Airforce pilot who left to pursue a journalistic career and is presently the BBC Urdu Service Chief in London.
The book has at its core the real incident of the plane crash which killed General Zia and the American ambassador among a few others and spawned quite a few conspiracies then.
Written in first person from the perspective of the protagonist Ali Shigri, a junior army officer, "A Case..." is a thriller, which weaves loose strands of all these conspiracies, and then some, whipping up a delightful read with a biting black humour and pithy dialogue.
Each of the conspiratorial strand is a real and distinct possibility, leaving the reader guessing and gasping. And as I said above, beneath the comic style lies a very realistic backdrop of power-hungry & paranoid army generals with a terrific power over the civil society of Pakistan in the name of democracy and sharia.
With summers around, and mangoes in full supply, this is one book you should surely read, specially if you are an average Indian with even a little interest in our friendly neighborhood Pakistan.

Good Old Radio Commentary

On the eve of the historical cricket world-cup final match between India & Sri Lanka, I was dismayed to learn that the next day, while the crucial latter half of the game would be played out, I was required to be present at a social gathering 2 hours away from my home.
This meant that while millions of cricket fans would be glued to their TV screens, I would be negotiating heavy traffic on the dark hilly terrain from Gurgaon to Faridabad, totally missing out this possible chance to be a part of the history in making.
Wading through these dire straits, where do you think my help came from? From the most unexpected quarters - the AIR radio commentary!
For most of us urban dwellers, radio commentary is a forgotten, poor cousin of the TV telecasts. Radio commentaries it seems can never capture the ball-by-ball excitement and ensure audience's vicarious participation in the game as a TV telecast does.
That evening, when I drove back from Faridabad through a light drizzle and admittedly light traffic, with darkness of the Aravallis punctured by only the headlights of my car, I switched on the 106.4MW FM radio in a desperate move to at least keep abreast of the score.
My hopelessness and prejudices were however instantly washed away by a superb commentary from AIR, which was in a manner as convincing as that of Dhoni & Co. The commentators in both Hindi (Sudip Banerjee and probably Kuldeep Singh Kang) and English (Suresh Saraiya) were simply excellent, bringing to me all the excitement & technical details without once going overboard. As India cruised towards victory, I never once missed the TV, being almost transported to the scene of action, my heartbeats pulsating with millions of others.
A part of me also remembered those forgotten moments of my childhood, when in the sleepy after-school afternoons of my dusty hometown, we used to listen to the transistor, lying down on the cool floors of our home. The technical details were sometimes quite obtuse for us children but the excitement in the commentators' voices rising above the din of the stadium made it all worthwhile.
When Dhoni struck the final six, I leaped in joy, losing the control of my car for a moment. This shot had brought the cup (and me) home, riding safely on the airwaves.

Quo Vadis? - The Agitation over Lokpal

Cartoon with thanks from http://rajaputhran.sulekha.com/
As I write this, the celebrated Gandhian and social activist Anna Hazare has ended his fast-unto-death, undertaken to push for immediate introduction of a robust Lokpal (Ombudsman) Bill against corruption in civil life.
It is beyond any question that corruption has heavily & rampantly eaten in to the innards of our political and administrative machinery and grossly affected our daily lives. The situation is now so obviously bad that a minimum level of graft & corruption is not only tolerated, it is almost expected.
This desperate situation explains the enormous surge of support this movement has received, aided in no mean measure by the impeccable credentials of Anna. We should be justifiably jubilant about how this movement has brought the issue in to a much needed sharper focus.
But now while we "civil-society" have partaken our share of the elixir of ideological victory, congratulated ourselves by clicking on the Like buttons and celebrated by disparaging the political system thoroughly, it would do well for us to remember that oligarchy is no solution to this problem.
It is the robustness of our political system and resilience of our democracy which still remains the best hope in establishing a fair and corruption-free society. We should therefore not get carried away in our protests and be led astray by the self-appointed custodians of the civil society who are vociferously denouncing the whole political system and pressing for more autonomy and more teeth to their vigilante justice. Most of these supporters have hitch-hiked themselves on to this bandwagon with an attempt to shine in the reflected glory of Anna and serve their respective ends.
My thought finds congruence in today's editorial of Indian Express (IE dated 9th April'11), which I reproduce here below for you to read.

The Caste System Revisited (Osho) - 3 (Last)

The Caste System Revisited (Osho) - 2

The Caste System Revisited (Osho) - 1

- Tu Raja Kee Rajdulari

(Indian Ocean)

For getting me introduced to Indian Ocean, I need to probably thank my job.
It was around 7-8 years back, when I was assigned to look after a visiting customer and I called him on his mobile that the soulful rendering of "Arre Ruk Ja Re Bandeh" pierced my heart like a sweet thorn of seduction.
What was this sound, I wondered? A so obviously Indian chant in the cacophony of "Indi-pop"?
It was a Delhi band "Indian Ocean", I was informed and I promptly ignored it as one freak good song from one of those innumerable tuneless bands on the circuit, which play cover versions and totally unoriginal songs with western context. I could not, however, get "Bandeh" out of my head.

And then, very recently, "Leaving Home" happened. Since then, times have not been the same.
Leaving Home, though a non-fiction film, is actually a passionate "rockumentary" about how this phenomenon called Indian Ocean was born with the confluence of life-stories of its members and crossing of their destinies and grew to finally reach the exalted perch it occupies now.
More than that, however, it is so obviously a tribute by a fan to their "forceful energy" and "their music which obviously shows no sign of dating". Listening to their music acquires a whole new meaning once you have watched this movie. It makes their passion and musical journey your very own to cherish and the satisfaction of working towards perfection your own to bask in.
Indian Ocean is probably the only truly Indian rock band with a compact (five albums) repertoire of original, soulful songs with Indian sounds. More importantly, all the songs have a context firmly placed in the Indian mindspace. All of them with gravitas and all of them very mellifluous.
Apart from hugely popular "Bandeh", there is the ancient prayer - "Kandisa"; the folk song about Narmada River - "Ma Reva"; the song of the morning - Bhor; the song about the montage called India - Des Mera, which is a part of movie Peepli Live and many more.
The band is known by its main members - Sushmit Sen, Rahul Ram, Amit Kilam and Asheem Chakravarty. Sadly, Asheem passed away in 2009 but seems has provided the band with enough of spine and inspiration which, I trust, would last them their lifetimes to continue producing good songs.
Last weekend, Indian Ocean performed in Gurgaon at a select gathering of around 250 fans, which I was fortunate to be a part of. And right from the moment Rahul struck the first chord on his guitar through the frenzied jugalbandi of Amit and Nikhil (a new member, who I do not know is permanent as of now) till the end two hours later, it was a musical treat so typical of the band - high on energy but never overboard, soulful, talking of things that matter and taking all the audience along.
As I was too busy rocking my head and swaying to their beats, I could not record anything but I have gleaned their most famous Bandeh from Youtube here below for you. If you have heard IO before, I am sure you would like it.
If you havent yet, welcome now to the IO Fan Club.
