The Caste System Revisited (Osho) - 1

- Tu Raja Kee Rajdulari

(Indian Ocean)

For getting me introduced to Indian Ocean, I need to probably thank my job.
It was around 7-8 years back, when I was assigned to look after a visiting customer and I called him on his mobile that the soulful rendering of "Arre Ruk Ja Re Bandeh" pierced my heart like a sweet thorn of seduction.
What was this sound, I wondered? A so obviously Indian chant in the cacophony of "Indi-pop"?
It was a Delhi band "Indian Ocean", I was informed and I promptly ignored it as one freak good song from one of those innumerable tuneless bands on the circuit, which play cover versions and totally unoriginal songs with western context. I could not, however, get "Bandeh" out of my head.

And then, very recently, "Leaving Home" happened. Since then, times have not been the same.
Leaving Home, though a non-fiction film, is actually a passionate "rockumentary" about how this phenomenon called Indian Ocean was born with the confluence of life-stories of its members and crossing of their destinies and grew to finally reach the exalted perch it occupies now.
More than that, however, it is so obviously a tribute by a fan to their "forceful energy" and "their music which obviously shows no sign of dating". Listening to their music acquires a whole new meaning once you have watched this movie. It makes their passion and musical journey your very own to cherish and the satisfaction of working towards perfection your own to bask in.
Indian Ocean is probably the only truly Indian rock band with a compact (five albums) repertoire of original, soulful songs with Indian sounds. More importantly, all the songs have a context firmly placed in the Indian mindspace. All of them with gravitas and all of them very mellifluous.
Apart from hugely popular "Bandeh", there is the ancient prayer - "Kandisa"; the folk song about Narmada River - "Ma Reva"; the song of the morning - Bhor; the song about the montage called India - Des Mera, which is a part of movie Peepli Live and many more.
The band is known by its main members - Sushmit Sen, Rahul Ram, Amit Kilam and Asheem Chakravarty. Sadly, Asheem passed away in 2009 but seems has provided the band with enough of spine and inspiration which, I trust, would last them their lifetimes to continue producing good songs.
Last weekend, Indian Ocean performed in Gurgaon at a select gathering of around 250 fans, which I was fortunate to be a part of. And right from the moment Rahul struck the first chord on his guitar through the frenzied jugalbandi of Amit and Nikhil (a new member, who I do not know is permanent as of now) till the end two hours later, it was a musical treat so typical of the band - high on energy but never overboard, soulful, talking of things that matter and taking all the audience along.
As I was too busy rocking my head and swaying to their beats, I could not record anything but I have gleaned their most famous Bandeh from Youtube here below for you. If you have heard IO before, I am sure you would like it.
If you havent yet, welcome now to the IO Fan Club.

Letter to the Editor

Outlook recently brought out a sex-survey special issue dated 24th Jan. My take on this, published in the issue dated Feb14, 2011 is in the Letters section:

You have sadly squandered away the opportunity to seriously explore this largely virgin (pun intended) territory. Instead we have an insipid survey and compilation of inane personal accounts.

Continuing with the Delhi exploration theme, I was at Red Fort this last Sunday. It is surprising how we spend our whole lives moving along the peripheries and never venturing what is within our reach. As Baba Bulle Shah has said - जेड़ा घर बैठा, ओनु फडदा ई नईं (Reach out we do not, to He who resides within).
Red Fort is a magnificent palace, though a bare one now - so unlived in, so unlike the palaces of Rajasthan, which I find still warm and hospitable.
This has perhaps something to do with the fact that Red Fort has not been home to anyone since the time its last occupant - Bahadur Shah Zafar, the Last Mughal, was captured by the British after 1857.
Here are some pictures of the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk for you:

बादळ री ओटां खोवैलो;

Sunday at the Qutub

2011 - Resolutions, anyone?

Resolutions are just not my scene. I am brutally reminded of this every time I undergo the Happy New Year rigmarole, and see strong-willed people around me making a list - not one, not two - a whole list of resolutions!
In the true spirit of a procrastinator, I, when faced with the inevitability of such strong actions, make a wishful thinking instead, and then pray endlessly that it becomes true. So, as we move in to this new year 2011, here is a small wishlist of mine:

  1. I wish a face-to-face televised debate to be held between the maoists / naxalites and the government so that we could finally decide who are the real villains. As of now, we oscillate from being fashionably-forward types thinking in favor of the down-trodden to being politically correct and supporting the salwa-judum etc.
  2. I wish each street of our nation could be accorded autonomy and granted a status of a federal democratic republic, which would finally put to rest the unrest over ever-increasing "regional aspirations", simply because there would be nothing more left to break free of.
  3. I wish we could formally institutionalize the corruption in every sphere of our lives and governance. The parliament could discuss and draw up a detailed rate-list for all jobs to be done. This would make things more transparent and efficient and whats more - when India hosts the Olympics, we could concentrate on the sport without wasting our collective time on trivial moral issues.
  4. I wish the traffic police starts handing out "road-rage metres" along with the driving licenses. This would constitute a traffic-light contraption to be worn on the head by the driver, with the color indicating the person's temperature. You could at least avoid arguing with a person with a flashing red light on his head.
  5. I wish the perpetrators of  "honor-killings' on innocent youngsters finally grow eyes in front of their faces and look forward for a change.
  6. I wish the T20s to be progressively reduced to T10 and then possibly to T-1/6 to ensure a steady   excitement dose for cricket-crazy public and a steadier endorsement income for the cricketers. In foreseeable future, the cheerleaders could replace the players.
  7. I wish Google search could be somehow activated in real-life (remember those sci-fi novels). Lost keys, misplaced papers etc. have started becoming a problem in advanced age.
  8. In the same manner, I wish there could be a system of affixing "Like" buttons on living people. Making friends and enemies would be so much easier, and would remove so much of duplicity from the world.
  9. I wish a directive to be brought out to consign all the present and future infamous reality shows  to a single TV channel, which would make it awfully easy for us to avoid them like they do for tele-shopping networks.
  10. In a similar manner, I sincerely wish there is a separate radio FM channel for the ever-increasing property / real estate / builder ads. I know housing is a good economic indicator but I simply can not bear to hear anymore of those irritatingly well-modulated voices exhorting me to drool at some "dream-property" at some undreamed-of locations.
  11. I wish the TV news-channels could take out some time to show only tickers on their screens - maybe a warp and waft design or some other, so that in the remaining time they do not torment us with multiple news tickers at the bottom of the screen which are completely undecipherable.
  12. I wish each honored member of the Gen-Y (or is it Z now?) is made to attend a compulsory coaching on "How to speak Hindi in Hindi".
  13. I wish being 'sexy' includes being fat and bald - in this year and ahead.
Do let me know if you can add to this list.

Chhalla by Rabbi Shergill

English Translation:
The ring it listens to no one
The ring it listens only to my mom
It will leave only if she tell it to
Listen my love
Don’t know who’s done this voodoo

The ring it lies on the well
Let’s talk face to face
Listen my love
Don’t you wanna see me sometime
It’s hard for me not to see you

The ring a borewell’s water
Where has my love drifted to
I have no news
Listen my love
On your berry has grown a thorn

The ring unripe mangoes
Someone give me sage advices
Let’s commit to contemplation
What’s left of time yours and mine
Listen my love
Or our lives will go waste

The ring a long braid
I kissed it in my dream
The desire had gone blind
But I listened to my heart
Listen my love
Now punish me as you will

The ring a lone banyan
He holds on to the
Earth below and God above
Listen my love
How far run his roots
He knows not himself

To Kill a Mocking Bird

I am not sure why but the title "To Kill a Mocking Bird" always seemed  to suggest to me a chilling murder mystery.
Ignorance of the highest order, I say to myself now; To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee is one of the most heart-warming books I have ever read, even though it deals with a very sensitive subject of racial inequality in the old American society.
Set in a small town of the racial America of 1930s, it is the story of how a principled and morally upright white lawyer Atticus Finch fights the case of a black man charged with rape of a white girl. And while in the process, he also fights the prejudices of almost the whole town with the strength of his convictions of equality, which are way ahead of his times. It is a sensitive subject matter, considering that the book was written in 1960, when the American society was still forming its opinion on racism.
Apart from the subject matter which is instinctively close to any right thinking human being, what makes the book amusing and full of warmth is the delightful narrative written from the innocent outlook of Scout Finch, 6 year old daughter of Atticus. The perspective and moral stand one wishes to take is not forced upon the reader, the choice is for him to make.
One more important feature of the book is the character of Atticus Finch. He is obviously a morally upright lawyer, an ideal for many. More than that however, he is a great father and morally ideal human being, who has got his values intact and leads by example. A real hero for all the right reasons.
I strongly recommend an immediate reading of this classic.

Mindful of the actual gifts firmly out of their reach, these canines are trying to borrow some warmth from just being in the vicinity.
Sounds familiar?

Robot. Dot.

In all my naivete, I used to once think that film-making is an art. Till I watched Robot, that is.
It was then that I realised that sometimes, film-watching is a greater art, requiring sublime patience to endure and sift through a three-hour (okay, leave out that last 45minutes) gaudy, kitsch-filled ordeal, in the name of hero-worship.

Robot, I am being told, is the costliest Indian film to-date, having sucked in a whopping Rs. 150Crores. To show for it, it has admittedly some of the best technical & digital effects, which have yet to be seen in any Indian movie. Specially the last 30-45 minutes do remind one of a Hollywood movie and are truly a treat to watch on the big screen.

But surely, a film is not just technology, is it? Even if it stars the biggest phenomenon called Rajnikant, it would do well for a film to have some decent emotional content, even passable music, and at least some semblance of acting from the supporting cast. Not here, unfortunately. Scratch the surface sheen and you would find, what I suspect, would be a purely run-of-the-mill Tamil film were it not for Rajnikant. Is that a strength of this top-grosser till date, I do not know.

I have to say that even though I am not sold on Rajni antics, and have not followed him in Tamil movies, Rajnikant is one genuine & honest actor, who I have always liked - right from Geraftaar and Andha Kanoon up to Hum. Somehow, he rises above the context. Which is why he is a superstar that he is.

Robot is all about Rajnikant. And some more. Rest is, as Chitti says - dot.
